Reactive Power and Voltage Control Issues in Electric Power Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter was prepared primarily for "non power" engineers to introduce reactive power and voltage control concepts, and to identify several issues that remain as research challenges in this area. It begins with basic definitions and information on reactive power, and then focuses on problems that have been known for many years and have surfaced recently in power system operations. These problems are described in the framework of traditional security analysis used in control centers throughout the world. The research challenges identify areas where collaboration between power systems engineers and applied mathematicians could yield major advances in power system reliability.

Simultaneous RPD and SVC Placement in Power Systems for Voltage Stability Improvement Using a Fuzzy Weighted Seeker Optimization Algorithm
Voltage stability issues are growing challenges in many modern power systems. This paper proposes optimizing the size and location of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) devices using a Fuzzy Weighted Seeker Optimization Algorithm (FWSOA), as an effective solution to overcome such issues. Although the primary purpose of SVC is bus voltage regulation, it can also be useful for voltage stability enhance...
متن کاملA Comparison between SVC and STATCOM in Flicker Mitigation of Electric Arc Furnace using Practical Recorded Data
Electric arc furnace (EAF) is one of the largest loads in electric power systems. It is highly time varying and nonlinear. Its reactive power variations cause voltage fluctuations in nearby system which is known as flicker. On the other hand the nonlinear voltage-current characteristic causes strong voltage and current harmonics in EAF. To this end Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) techn...

In emerging electric power systems, increased transactions often lead to the situations where the system no longer remains in secure operating region. The flexible Ac transmission system (FACTS) controllers can play an important role in the power system security enhancement. However, due to high capital investment, it is necessary to locate these controllers optimally in the power system. FACTS...
متن کاملA Local Power Control Scheme for Electronically Interfaced Distributed Generators in Islanded Microgrids
The conventional real power-frequency and reactive power-voltage droop characteristics are commonly employed to share the electric power among parallel distributed generation (DG) units. Despite some advantages such as easy implementation and no need for communication infrastructure, inaccurate reactive power sharing is one of the main disadvantages of conventional droop control. This paper pre...

متن کاملLoss of Excitation Detection in Doubly Fed Induction Generator by Voltage and Reactive Power Rate
The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is one of the most popular technologies used in wind power systems. With the growing use of DFIGs and increasing power system dependence on them in recent years, protecting of these generators against internal faults is more considered. Loss of excitation (LOE) event is among the most frequent failures in electric generators. However, LOE detection stud...
